The Northern Circuit Is The Newest And Longest Route On Mount Kilimanjaro. It Begins In The West At The Londorossi Gate And Follows The Same Path As The Lemosho Route For The First Two Days. After Crossing The Shira Plateau The Path Veers North Near Lava Tower, Following The Longer Northern Circuit Instead Of The More Popular Southern Circuit Via Barranco Valley The Route Circles Around The Quieter Northern Slopes To The East Side Of The Mountain.

Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.

Generally serving as a great warm up (acclimatization) trek for a Kilimanjaro climb, Mt Meru is also a spectacular trek in it’s own right and offers an exciting first day through the park forest (almost like a walking safari) with an armed ranger (shared with other groups) before taking you on the dry alpine zones up to the scree filled peak. 6 Days Machame Route Compared with other Route like Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro southern ice field before summiting. Although is started days on trekking is recommended by company Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied.

The Lemosho Route is relatively new. It starts on the Western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the Londorossi Gate and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira Route which begins at a higher, more challenging altitude. The Londorossi Gate is a fair drive from the town of Moshi, and considerably further from Arusha. At the gate, you will register with the authorities before being driven a further 12km to the starting point. The western side of Kilimanjaro is still very wild and you may get lucky and spot large antelope, buffalo and maybe even elephant. The Lemosho Route joins the Machame Route at Lava Tower and heads down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit (see map below). As with the Machame Route, Lemosho trekkers need to transverse the Barranco Wall and then summit from Barafu Camp. The descent is via the Mweka route.

It starts with a nice day of walking through the rainforest and has a nice steady altitude increase each day. The accommodation on the way up and down is strictly camping (movable tents) only. The Machame Route takes you high to Lava Tower on day 3 then brings you down for an overnight at Barranco Camp. This intermediate ascent and descent is the secret to a successful acclimatization and is the reason that this route has a high success rate.

Access to the North Pare Mountains is available through the town of Mwanga, which is located 55 km (35 mi) to the southeast of Moshi. From there, a sandy road leads visitors to Usangi village in the heart of the mountain range. There are 11 peaks that surround the village, most of which offer ample adventure opportunities for hikers in the area. The Kindoroko Trail is a particularly popular option in the region as it leads visitors through a forest reserve where hikers will be able to spot monkeys and a wide variety of birds. Along all of the main trekking routes in the North Pare Mountains, hikers can enjoy impressive vantage points that let you see well-known features like Lake Jipe and even Kilimanjaro when it’s not hidden in the clouds.
