Marangu Route also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Mount Kilimanjaro, and is also the only route offering comfortable sleeping huts at every campsite with solar lights and comfortable beds. The huts are shared by all climbers and the bunks have sponge mattresses and pillows so require fewer supplies. The Marangu Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. It is, unfortunately, less scenic than other routes because the ascent and descent are on the same path. Compared to other routes, it offers relative luxury. This non-technical Kilimanjaro route is the only route to offer permanent mountain huts at each overnight stop. Marangu, also known as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route due to its popularity in the past however, is no longer the favored choice of the modern trekkers who prefer the longer camping based routes. Marangu approaches the Kibo cone from the Southeast and ascends and descends via the same trail which has been modified to make it more climber friendly. This is the perfect choice for amateur trekkers looking to avoid camping.

Kilimanjaro trekking Marangu route 5 days itinerary is fairly easy despite its difficult at the final part to the summit. Termed easier route, the route has encountered the highest failure rate due to bad preparation and untimely attempt. The above situations have moved KINAPA officials to put more emphasis and serious measures for those who climbing Mt Kilimanjaro on Marangu route. All camps along this route have good radio communication to the park office. Some goods like mineral water, soft drinks, beer and chocolates are available in these camps. Marangu route can be trekked in 5 days however, one additional day is advisable for acclimatization at Horombo camp. Marangu is the only route on this Mountain that offers hut accommodation in beds and mattresses.

Approaching Kilimanjaro from the south-west, we take the popular Machame Route, with a total trip time of seven days, this is giving us even more acclimatization time and an even better chance of reaching the summit. Lush rainforest and Alpine moorland characterize the Machame Route, a trek which is challenging, make no mistake, despite the extra time given to acclimatize. You will have a private vehicle to take you to and from the mountain.

Because of its remote location the route offers trekkers a relatively unspoilt wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife like antelope, elephant and buffalo. The North-East side of the mountain gets significantly less moisture than the southern slopes which means that trekkers are less likely to encounter rain. Trekkers are also more likely to get clear, unclouded views of the mountain. The Rongai Route is flatter than the other Kilimanjaro routes but because of its profile it does not offer trekkers good options to climb high and sleep low. It can be hiked on a six, seven or even eight day. The seven or eight day Rongai routes are highly recommended as trekkers have extra days to acclimatise.

The Marangu route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, most well established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut. Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Kinukamori is located in Chagga Land in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its crystal clear water originates in the natural springs of volcanic rocks on Kilimanjaro. You will be able to visit Kinukamori on top and bottom. This picturesque spot is great for swimming or just relaxing and enjoying the refreshing breeze from the waterfall. Starting at 8.30 am a thirty minute drive from Moshi will take us to Marangu Village, where we will begin our short 20 minute hike to Kinukamori Waterfall. Along the way you will pass thru beautiful forest past tall Eucalyptus trees among many others.

The climb commences at Londorossi Gate which is situated at an altitudinal level of 2360 meters and approaches far to the west of the mountain before circling around Kilimanjaro to the south. It passes through majestic dense rain forest and offer sightings of most unique wildlife of the region. The route then leads all the way up to the third summit of the mountain at Shira Ridge. Then you’ll cross the famed Shira plateau and see the beautiful Shira Cathedral before reaching the Shira Camp on day three. Thus the initial few days offer a quiet climbing experience overlooking the amazing terrain before embarking on a more challenging and heavily traveled route to the summit. Descend is done by the Mweka trail instead of retracing along the ascent route.

Northern Circuit The longest and the newest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit, is known for excellent acclimatization and breathtaking views of the Kilimanjaro northern slopes. For the present moment a very limited number of travelers have set foot on this trail, and the route is hardly ever crowded. It is recommended to those who enjoy long trekking experiences in remote wilderness with a minimal number of other trekkers around. It takes at least eight days to climb Kilimanjaro through the Northern Circuit which is why the route boasts a very high success rate. A 9-day extended version with crater camping is also available for an incredible wilderness adventure on Africa’s highest volcano.

For those who don't want to summit the Mighty Kilimanjaro, a day trip may offer you the perfect alternative, you can walk via the Marangu route up to Mandara Hut, which is 2,700 metres above sea level where there is a small crater. The name Rongai Route is actually something of a misnomer. Sure, it’s the name that everybody uses but, strictly speaking, it’s not the correct one. The real, original Rongai Route used to start at the border village of the same name but was closed several years ago by the authorities who decided that two trails on a side of the mountain that few trekkers visit was unnecessary. You will still see this route marked on many maps, but today all trekkers who wish to climb Kili from the north now follow a different trail, also known as the Loitokitok Route after the village that lies near the start. (Just to confuse the issue still further, this isn’t officially the correct name either, for along the trail you’ll see various signs calling this trail the Nalemuru Route – or, occasionally, Nalemoru – though this name is rarely used by anybody.)
