The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accommodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents. The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail.

In the early morning, you will be picked up from your hotel for a scenic drive to Ngorongoro crater, via Manyara, Karatu. Upon arrival, and after entry formalities, you`ll descend into the crater floor for wonderful game drives. Ngorongoro crater is a vast, pristine volcanic caldera, spanning over 102 square miles, encircled by towering 2,000-foot-high walls. Within this natural haven reside rare and endangered black rhinoceros, black-backed jackals, hippos, regal secretary birds, graceful ostriches, formidable buffaloes, wildebeests, ibis’ stocks, starlings, majestic lions, gentle elephants, kori bustards, elegant crane birds, cunning hyenas, fleet-footed gazelles, playful baboons, sturdy warthogs, stately elands, leopards, vultures, sand grouse, and a myriad of other captivating creatures. Arusha National Park is often overlooked by travelers rushing to the more famous sights of the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti. However, with a little time, Arusha National Park offers some lovely walking in the foothills of Mount Meru and canoeing on the Momela Lakes, plus gentle game drives. If you have the time it is well worth a day or two. There are a range of activities to do in Arusha National Park. This includes walking safaris which are always accompanied by a ranger and last for a maximum of four hours, during which you would stop for a break at one of the park's lovely picnic sites. You can also explore the far reaches of the park by vehicle, taking in some of the lovely views and keeping an eye out for wildlife. Another great activity here and one not found in other safari parks in Tanzania, is a canoeing safari which allows you to explore the Momela Lakes.

Climbing the 6 days Machame route can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. With an approximation of 62 km/ 37 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but plenty of first time trekker use the route as well and do just fine.

The second hottest option among the climbers is that the Machame route also referred to as “the Whiskey Route”. This route offers a good sort of views, landscapes, and experiences. The start line of the route, Machame Gate, is merely a 20-minute drive from Aishi Machame Hotel. Located on the southern slope of Mt Kilimanjaro, Machame Gate will lead you to the highest of Kilimanjaro along the exciting footpath which starts at the tropical forest, then runs through all the climate zones and finishes with the Arctic desert within the summit area. Camps along the trek are favorably located for a smooth and gradual acclimatization transition process. On the 3rd day, Machame Route converges with Lemosho and Umbwe at Barranco camp. You can choose from a six or seven-day climb. The latter one is very preferred for better acclimatization transition.

Shira route starts on the Western Site of the Kilimanjaro. It is almost the same as the Lemosho route. But on the first day, you ascend to the 2nd camp of the Lemosho route. Only after that, do the two routes correspond. Shira Route is one of the older and less frequented routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a challenging yet rewarding climb with stunning scenery and diverse landscapes. Shira Route is known for its breathtaking views, particularly across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. Hikers can expect to see dramatic landscapes, including volcanic cones, glaciers, and lush valleys. The route also offers excellent views of Kibo, the summit crater of Kilimanjaro.

The Machame route, also known as the Whisky Route is one of the most scenic and recommended routes on Kilimanjaro. This popular route with paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Ice fields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. Because it can be done over longer periods and the incline is more manageable it has a much higher success rate of summit.

This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is one of the newest and considered to be one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro as it is the only one to offer a near 360 degree trail around the main Kibo cone and crosses the northern circuit trail which is rarely used and much quieter than the other routes used. Due to it’s long nature and super acclimatization profile, you have one of the highest chances of reaching the peak, especially in 9 or more days. This route is also preferred by those looking to avoid the small ‘scrambling’ (using your hands and legs) section at the Barranco wall which is found on the southern circuit approaches.

All climbing groups, often from several countries around the world, share meals in dining huts providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere. This route is usually done on 5 days but can be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo Huts or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi.
