Tarangire National Park contains the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem a smorgasbord for predators and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared Oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. The landscape varies dramatically from the wet season to the dry. During the dry, the River shrivels to a shadow of its wet season self, but it is choked with wildlife as thirsty nomads wander hundreds of km knowing that they will always find water here. Tarangire’s mobs of elephant are easily encountered, wet or dry and the swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Tarangire’s pythons climb trees where you find most Baobab Trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree helps disguise the switch of a tail.

The mountain can be climbed in 6 hours, affording breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley and volcanic formations in the Ngorongoro highlands as you get to the summit. It is an adventurous hike starting at dawn. Lying on the base of the mountain, Lake Natron is said to be the only breeding area for the endangered Lesser Flamingoes that live in the Great Rift Valley and it is believed to be the world’s most important breeding site for the Lesser Flamingoes, accounting for 75 per cent of the global population. The soda lake sits on the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley part in East Africa and is quite shallow, less than three meters deep, and varies in width depending on its water level. The temperatures in the lake mud can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius where evaporation causes high alkalinity. It is said the lake’s high alkaline environment is a barrier against predators trying to reach the flamingo nests.

The camp has 20 lavish and expansive tents on wooden decks with either king or twin beds, comfortable leather armchairs, coffee and writing tables. The tents have showers and double vanities, surrounded by a veranda with stunning chairs. The main area of the camp is very comfortable with large leather chairs and views onto the Serengeti plains. There is a swimming pool and the camp is child friendly. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in Serengeti National Park and return to the camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight – Serengeti Migration Camp.
