The Lemosho route is one of our preferred routes due to its low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. The Lemosho route starts off from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the lush rainforest to Shira Plateau. We recommend a minimum of 7 days to attempt this route but 8 days is preferable for better acclimatization and summit success. The Lemosho route joins the Machame route at Shira 2 Camp and then follows the same route through the southern circuit and descending at Mweka Gate.
Waterfalls (quite cold!)
Materuni is place inside a village called Uru located in Kilimanjaro, the 50 meter Materuni waterfall is one of the hidden treasures of Kilimanjaro region and offers you the opportunity to hike through coffee farms and enjoy spectacular views. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch at the base of the Materuni waterfall and swim in the pool of the waterfalls.
Starting from the Rongai gate, the route traverses several diverse climate zones, and each produces its own amazing views and experiences. Because of its remote location, the route offers trekkers a relatively unspoiled wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife like antelope, elephants, and buffalo. Heading up to Kikelewa Caves on day two, the views start to open up, with the Amboseli Plains of Kenya stretching into the distance. The route continues up to the mountain’s second summit at Mawenzi, before crossing the Saddle, a barren plain that connects the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After reaching the summit, the descent is along the more heavily traveled Marangu route, offering you the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro from both sides.

Materuni Waterfalls: the Village of Materuni sits at the edge of Mount Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. Your hike will pass through the winding village roads and within the lush rainforest.
Materuni Waterfall is one of the highest in the area, reaching a height of 80 meters. You are permitted to swim in the pool below the falls, but take note, the water is biting-cold, since it is sourced from glacier water, directly off the mountain.
