Tanzania’s Tarangire national park, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater are some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. While camping in basic tents and cooking meals over a campfire, a camping safari in Tanzania still provides an immersive and authentic experience that allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the African wilderness. Considered to be the most beautiful and scenic of the various routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, the Machame Route is appropriate for more adventurous hikers who wish for a more physically demanding climb than Marangu or Rongai can offer. Machame is presently the most popular route despite its higher degree of difficulty, so you can expect to not be the only one climbing. You can choose to complete this route in either six days or seven days.

This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is one of the newest and considered to be one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro as it is the only one to offer a near 360 degree trail around the main Kibo cone and crosses the northern circuit trail which is rarely used and much quieter than the other routes used. Due to it’s long nature and super acclimatization profile, you have one of the highest chances of reaching the peak, especially in 9 or more days. This route is also preferred by those looking to avoid the small ‘scrambling’ (using your hands and legs) section at the Barranco wall which is found on the southern circuit approaches.

As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route. After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of the summit.

Climbing Kilimanjaro via the 5-day Marangu Route offers a unique opportunity to discover the world’s tallest free-standing mountain and reach the summit of the highest peak in Africa, Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. It’s the only route that provides huts for accommodation and camping. Cycle around the base of Africa’s tallest mountain and highest volcano. This is a bike trip like no other! This adventure takes us through solitary rainforests, fertile fields of crop and through wild, dry acacia rich savannah, which is the home of the Maasai. The tracks around the cloud shrouded, snow-capped roof of Africa are mainly dusty, sometimes rocky, with a few asphalt roads. The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accomodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents. The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail.

Lemosho route is one of the best routes for acclimatization. The route is less used and a beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger, as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are inhabited by buffalo, elephant and other wildlife. 8 days Lemosho has one of the highest sucess rates. The additional days give your body more time to acclimatize, reducing the effects of altitude sickness and give you more time to rest before attempting the summit.

The period between - December and March - sees the large herds of migrant wildebeest and zebras concentrate in the low grass plains of the central-southern Serengeti for the birthing season: 80% of the newborns see the light precisely at this moment of year. The savannahs are covered with herbivores as far as the eye can see, their presence attracts numerous predators. An excellent, extended safari which gives us plenty of time in beautiful Serengeti National Park, and also introduces us to the magic of Tanzania’s other natural Northern Circuit attractions. We will begin our adventure on this five-day adventure in Lake Manyara, small but certainly not lacking in interesting sights, sounds and smells and set against a dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley escarpment, not forgetting the glistening lake itself. In Serengeti, we will have a full program of game-drives, letting us explore the stunning and varied landscapes of this famous place. All the time, we’ll be looking for the best wildlife experiences, before we depart for another Tanzanian gem, the incomparable crater of Ngorongoro, on the lookout for a black rhino. Then, we finish our adventure in Tarangire National Park, another of the Northern Circuit’s true jewels and famous for its large herd of elephants and iconic baobab trees.

This route provides the opportunity to “trek high and sleep low” which is considered important in minimizing the potential for altitude sickness. The climb starts above the picturesque mountain village of Machame to the south of Kilimanjaro. After passing through the Machame forest and into the moorland zone, we scramble up and over some rocks and eventually emerge onto the Shira Plateau. We then advance counter-clockwise traversing below the southern face of Kibo, climb Lava Tower for magnificent 360 degree panoramas, ascend the Great Barranco Wall, a challenging and exhilarating rock scramble, and approach Uhuru Summit from Barafu or Kossovo Camp and the ridge that abuts the Southeast Valley. The climb from Barafu offers incredible views of Mawenzi Peak and Kilimanjaro’s remnant volcanic cone.
