Explore the Basilica Cistern, an impressive underground reservoir located southwest of the Hagia Sophia. Built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it’s also known as the "Yerebatan Cistern" because of its submerged columns. The cistern measures 140 meters in length and 70 meters in width. To enter, descend a staircase of 52 steps. Inside, you’ll see 336 columns, each 9 meters tall, arranged in 12 rows. Most columns are made of single-piece marble, though some are in two parts. The cistern can hold approximately 100,000 tons of water. Be sure to check out the Medusa heads at the northwest end. These Roman-era sculptures may have been used as column supports. In Greek mythology, Medusa was known for turning people to stone and was believed to protect important places.
