The city of Tenochtitlan was the religious and political center of the Mexicas, and its Templo Mayor or Huey Teocalli was the building most important of that great pre-Hispanic city. There the four directions of the Earth and the axis of the three levels of life converged: heaven, earth and the underworld. Two sacred mountains were represented in the Huey Teocalli: the Cerro de los Mantenimientos or Tonacatépetl, to the north, arsenal of human food, and Coatépec, Cerro de las Serpientes, to the south, cradle of Huitzilopochtli.
