At Elounda you take the boat and cruise along the bay to the island of Spinalonga. The guided tour on Spinalonga will both fascinate and haunt you as you learn the tragic history of this island which was once a Venetian fortress and was then the isolated home of many lepers up to 1957 when it was cleared by the Health Authorities, leaving the place uninhabited. The Venetians constructed a very impressive fortress with forty cannons which has been guarding the strategic bay of Mirabello since the 15th century. We get on board again and head back to Elounda. Here we serve you your lunch and you will have time for resting or swimming in the crystal clear waters. After a short coach trip we arrive at Agios Nikolaos which lies on the shores of the Gulf of Mirabello and is famous for its 'bottomless lake’. You will have some free time on your own, to stroll around the shops or just relax in one of the popular cafes and watch the world go by. Our last stop is at a family olive oil factory.

Start your day tour discovering the beautiful east part of Crete! The day tour starts from visiting Toplou, a 15th-century monastery located in a dry and barren area. Toplou monastery is one of the most significant monasteries in Crete, dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary) and St. John the Theologian. Continue the tour, to visit the largest palm forest in Europe, Vai Palm Beach. The palm forest draws thousands of visitors each year. They come not only for its wonderful palm forest, but also for the large sandy beach spread out at its foot. Last stop of the day is at Sitia town, one of the least "touristy" parts of Crete, that was built up in Venetian times.

After a short drive through the Messara plain you reach Matala. Known for the colony of hippies in the Sixties, where they lived in large holes formed on the mountain. The rocks are holes with a Roman burial. In Matala you will have time for a refreshing dip in the water, eat something or just enjoy a drink on the beach. This is the place where Zeus, having taken the form a bull, swam ashore with Europa on his back before dragging her off to Gortys. Both the Minoans and the Romans used the place as their harbor. Nevertheless, for most people, Matala means only one thing: hippies. Back in the late 1960s - 1970s, this little town was a colony of the “flower children”, who lived in the caves that used to be former Roman tombs. After a ride in a modern, air conditioned bus transportation from Heraklion to Preveli Beach, you are free to go to explore this stunning area. While driving learn about the geology and history of South Crete. The bus will stop at a parking lot, the closest to the beach, where there is a path descending to the beach. The parking is located near towering vertical cliffs, where you can take some fantastic photos. To reach the beach descend the footpath (app. 400 stairs) that takes about 15 minutes. Wander the Palm Forest, full of Theophrastus palm trees and tropical flowers, animals, plants and the inkomparable atmosphere. Take a photo of the rushing Grand River and towering Kourtaliotikos Gorge cliffs and have a bath under the small waterfall at the end of the gorge. Return to the beach by walking in the river and have a refreshing drink at the bar of Preveli. After approximately 4 hours of free time at the beach, the day will come to an end and you return to Heraklion.
