In the open areas and grass plains you should see grazing zebra alongside Beisa oryx, kudu, Soemmerring's gazelle and Swayne’s hartebeest. Extra hiking ot Fantale mountain and crater Towards the west end of the park, 600m above the plains, lies Fantale Crater (2007m). With its terrific vistas, total quiet and cool air, this dormant volcano makes a great trek. At the top (a three-hour walk uphill; the 4WD track is no longer driveable) the 360-degree view is phenomenal and the elliptical caldera, which measures an enormous 3.5km in diameter, is quite an eerie sight in the morning when the steam vents can be seen.

In total, we spend around 45 to 60 minutes on foot. The tour lasts roughly four hours and we’ll keep the food and beer coming to make certain you leave happy and stuffed.

Explore the Danakil from the Afar capital Semera (590km from Addis Ababa) with the Ethiopian Airlines Daily flight. The Danakil is a genuine expedition destination. Although a good 350km road now runs from Semera to Mekele via Afdera, the tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale) require 4×4 and navigational skills. The region is best visited with an experienced operator using a minimum of two 4x4s, and experienced staff who know the local Afar. Helicopter access is from Mekele. Currently, we offer tours directly out of Semera. The minimum time required for a full tour is two nights, spending one at Hamed Ela and one on the rim of Erta Ale. An extra night at Erta Ale is recommended if you want to see the crater by day, and another for Lake Afdera. First of all, we drive to Melka Kuntre and Bachilt Archaeological Site located around 50km outside of Addis Ababa the Adadi Mariam Church located around 7km next to Melka Kuntre. Adadi Mariam is a subterranean rock-hewn church similar to those of Lalibela. After visiting the church we’ll make the short trip to the Tiya Stelae Field. This ancient archaeology site contains 36 monuments, including 32 carved stelae. This day trip includes lunch in the town of Tiya.
