The Kirigalpoththa Mountain Hike gives you a chance to climb up Kirigalpoththa, the second tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, starting from Horton Plains National Park. Feel the exhilaration of hiking up the mountain by a single overgrown trail with several difficult hiking and mountaineering sections. Pass through scenic grass plains, cloud forests, bogs and steep rocky surfaces. Discover the exceedingly beautiful nature and varied wildlife in Horton Plains and Kirigalpoththa. Enjoy lunch surrounded by the mountains. Take photographs of the best views.A 7km hike that is so difficult and treacherous that one in nine hikers are not able to finish the trek to the peak. Best attempted by the toughest and most experienced hikers. This hike is recommended from January to March but is also available from June to August.

Horton plains National Park is located 32 km away from Nuwaraeliya, Pattipola road via Ambewela in the highest tableland of Sri Lanka. We will drive to the starting point of the Horton Plan National Park. From the starting point we will start hiking through marvelous plateau which is covered by Montane evergreen forests, Cloud forests, Grass lands, Marshy Lands and Aquatic eco systems. Horton Plains is one of the most important catchment area which act as a giant sponge to store rain water. During the journey you can observe the large number of rare and as well as endemic flora and fauna species. The escarpment ‘Maha Lokanthaya’ ( Big Worlds End ) and the sparkling Baker’s falls are the amazing wonders which exceed the attractiveness of the plains. Blooming Nelu flowers once in 12 years of its life time vivid in indifferent colours is an unforgettable memory. After 9 km of hiking trek we will ride back to Nuwaraeliya
Kirigalpoththa is the 2nd highest Mountain of Sri Lanka after Pidurutalagala. With a peak elevation of 2,388 meters above sea level, Kirigalpoththa is the highest point in the Horton Plains National Park and also the highest peak accessible to the public. This 7 K.M trail (one way) will take around 5 1/2 hours of trekking, hiking & mountaineering challenges.
