Paarl made headlines when President Mandela was released from the Groot Drakenstein prison (formerly known as Victor Verster prison). We enjoy a wine tasting at one of the local estates. From Paarl, we'll continue north-west to the beautiful village of Franschhoek, founded in 1688 by French immigrants fleeing the Huguenot religious persecution in Europe. A memorial in the town commemorates the arrival of these early settlers who helped develop the wines sought after by Napoleon, Bismarck, and royalty such as Edward VII, the Prince of Wales. Here we will stop for lunch and another wine tasting at a local vineyard. We'll then head to Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and enjoy a final wine tasting before returning to Cape Town.

Upon pickup from your accommodation in Cape Town, we will take you to the Silo District, where you will be greeted by a former political prisoner and taken to the Nelson Mandela Gateway. Upon arrival at Robben Island Museum, you will be greeted by a former political prisoner and given a tour. The excursion lasts approximately four hours, including pickup from your hotel. (Your driver/tour guide will not accompany you on the Robben Island museum tour. The tour begins with a bus ride around the island, followed by a visit to Nelson Mandela's jail cell and the long trek to freedom.
