Cycling Ecopista do Dão One Way, full-day from Coimbra

After hotel pickup in Coimbra, we take direction to activity start in Viseu. Day dedicated to bicycle touring on an old railway branch that has 130 years of transport history and has now been converted into a bike-friendly Ecopista. It is an experience with a linear route in self-guide mode, 49.2 km long, almost always descending, crossing orchards, vineyards and part of the route, next to the magnificent Rio Dão ending in Santa Comba Dão, where we collect the participants and we return to Coimbra. Discover all the old Ecopista stations and stops, of which Torredeita Station stands out with an old locomotive. The views are magnificent, the northern area is abundant in cork, chestnut and oak trees, where you will also find some fields of cultivation and vineyards. In the south, it stands out for its huge strawberry trees and the Granjal bridge over the Aguieira reservoir.

Schist Villages of Lousã, full-day from Coimbra

We traveled through the Serra da Lousã, very close to and around Coimbra, in search of ancient customs, rural routines, we enjoyed the local gastronomy, we admired the mountain villages of Cerdeira, Candal, Talasnal and Casal Novo built with schist stone. We will go to extremes, visit Arouce Castle and the natural beach Nª Srª Piedade at the foot of the mountain and climb to the highest point of Trevim to balance on the popular Lousã swing. Lunch will be served in a typical restaurant with local cuisine, chanfana (goat meat cooked slowly in a wood-fired oven). There are other options if you don't like this typical dish. To end the day, there will still be space for a tasting of PDO sheep and goat cheese, olive oil, bread and wine in the cheese capital, Rabaçal. The first destination we will visit the highest inhabited village in Portugal, located at 1050 meters above sea level, Sabugueiro. We walk around the town for a while and get to know one of the oldest Portuguese shepherd dog species, the Serra da Estrela Dog. Coimbra is not a popular tourist center, and that is a good thing. A stroll through the old city with its stately medieval buildings without the crowds of tourists is not a common pleasure. But you will not find peace and quiet here – the old capital of Portugal has long opened the doors of its university to young people from all over Europe (and now the world). The vibrancy of the university city is picked up in the more out-of-the-way areas, where it's nice to sit in a café, go shopping or relax during an evening of fun.

The Upper Town, walled off from the rest of the city – and from the passage of time – by fortress walls, invites visitors to immerse themselves in its long history. Once the capital of Portugal, the narrow streets and opulent buildings still bear the imprint of grandeur. However, it is not the cathedral or the royal palace that towers over the city, but the temple of science – the University, one of the oldest in Europe. Many of the Old Town's monuments are related to it in one way or another: the Baroque library building, the chapel with the bell that many generations of students call "The Goat".

The Sala dos Capelos and the Via Latina colonnade are also worth a visit. It's impossible to imagine a Portuguese city without its greatest cathedrals, and Coimbra is no exception. The ancient architectural masterpiece, Sé Velha, is more like a Romanesque castle made of light-colored stone. The nearby Se Nova Cathedral is much more recent and, on the contrary, has an extravagant elegance. Tours also stop at the monastery of Santa Clara.
