Sacred Valley Connection to Machu Picchu (2 Days)

2

The valley around the imperial city of Cusco offers an endless landscape that is primely located on the banks of the sacred river, Vilcanota. Vilcanota river snakes through the valley of Cusco. It is the prime source of water for the villages located on its shores. The inhabitants of these villages have preserved the traditions, customs, and lifestyle that they have been practicing since the Incan reign. Just at the end of this sacred river nestles a town called Urubamba which forms a major part of the Sacred Valley. On this tour, you will be stopping here for lunch before boarding a tourist train to Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes is a gateway to one of the seven wonders of the world – Machu Picchu.

Full-Day Private Tour to Chinchero, Maras and Moray

You will start your tour in the Chinchero town, one of the most important towns of the Inca Empire located on a terrace at about 3500 masl, where beautiful Andean landscapes surround the place, framed by the calm beauty of the Chicón and Verónica snow-capped mountains. Every Sunday, the town becomes a trade center for products from the neighboring communities. Then visit the archaeological sites in Maras and Moray. Maras presents a surreal view. It is an impressive complex for the exploitation of salt mines. Its big salt deposits were used to trade for other products with other regions of the Empire. Morays archaeological vestiges are composed of mysterious concentric circular terraces which, according to some scholars, would be an agricultural research center. The higher external terraces would be at a higher temperature than the inner ones and could simulate the conditions of various ecological strata of the empire. When the tour is over, you will return to Cusco.

Maras Salt Mines & Moray with Chinchero Excursion

2
We'll get ready to our first visit of the day to Moray Terraces. Mostly consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is about 100 meters deep. but their depth and orientation with respect to wind and sun creates a temperature difference. This large temperature difference was possibly used by the Inca to study different climatic conditions on crops. Moray was perhaps an Inca agricultural experiment station, it also got a sophisticated irrigation system. Continue our day visiting Maras Salt Mines. During the pre-Incas time, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating of salty water. The highly salty water has been flowing from this nearby stream for hundreds of years. As the salt water becomes supersaturated, salt crystals begin precipitating out of the water. The farmers then scrape the salt to the side and collect it once a sizable amount has been gathered. There are more than 3,000 salt-pools.
