This is an affordable yet culturally-enriching bus trip to Kyoto and Nara. Tour stops at Kyoto Arashiyama, Kinkakuji-temple and Nara park. With several convenient pickup points in Osaka Kyoto, this tour will be a great addition to your trip to Japan.

Geisha traditions are traced to the spiritual center of Kyoto, where they were specified as geiko and maiko. Such a lovely tradition can hardly ever be enjoyed privately. From centuries ago, geiko and maiko parties have been given privately only for limited members of society. This tour makes it possible for visitors to truly experience the essence of geiko and maiko in an authentic manner. During the event, English-speaking guides will escort you around the geiko and maiko district, to be followed by a dinner or party arrangement lasting two hours. Since geiko or maiko are privately arranged only for your group, you will have the chance to fully exchange conversations with them and hear their stories which would normally not be told to the public.

Therefore, in our tour we go to the main sites of Nara (Kofuku-ji Temple, Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, and Kasuga Grand Shrine) before the crowd comes. Also, this tour ends before noon so you will have the noon time to explore other parts of Nara or make a day trip to Osaka/Kyoto as well. Let's explore the Gion District geisha streets and take a deep dive into the "real Kyoto" in this magical, night walking tour. The expert guide will share with you all the hidden details of the closed world of geishas and mysterious Shinto shrines. This is a walking tour going through several geisha districts, shrines, and beautifully preserved historic districts of Kyoto's Higashiyama area. The tour is about 3hr 30m. The guide is an expert, speaking very clear & easy to understand, native English. The guide is extremely knowledgeable and will be able to answer all your questions in detail. The guide will select a refreshing Kyoto snack during the break. (a small snack, not a full meal...will make every effort to cater to dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, vegan as well) You will get deep insight into the Japanese way-of thinking, culture, and traditions that can't be experienced on other tours.

One hour original and unique training which cannot be found other place. You could learn some ninja techniques by hands-on training in English. Enjoy an easy, culturally-enriching bus trip from Osaka to Kyoto. In the birthplace of maiko, Gion, stroll through the traditional streets of Kyoto while learning about the maiko culture from a local guide. After gathering at Gion Shijo Station, the tour will involve walking through the beautiful traditional machiya architecture and streets of Gion, the birthplace of maiko. A local guide will provide explanations about the origins and history of maiko while exploring the area. In this class, you can experience the tea ceremony in a 100-year-old house, wearing a rare and valuable antique kimono that is more than 80 years old. ● Here, you can learn tea ceremony etiquette and how to make delicious matcha tea. The fourth-generation owner of the kimono shop is a kimono specialist, so you can listen to a lecture on kimono while being shown kimonos suitable for various occasions. Of course, he can also help you co-ordinate your kimono. Wearing rare and valuable antique kimonos and learning about the tea ceremony is a unique experience here. Available in English.

Inclusivity is very important to us, and all are welcome. Chairs and tables are available for those that have difficulty sitting on the floor. All our sweets are vegan, nut free and gluten dress. Although we offer kimono rental, you do not need to wear kimono and please dress as you feel comfortable. Unfortunately children under 6 years old cannot participate in shared or private tea ceremonies. Feel free to take photos throughout the experience (please be mindful of other guests and please turn off the flash).

KYOTO MAIKOYA relocated to an old machiya house registered Tangible Cultural Property by the local government. It is a historic townhouse where you can feel the real Japanese culture and enjoy the tea ceremony by gazing at two picturesque Japanese tea gardens. You will make Green tea (Matcha) in an ancient style tea ceremony room wearing Kimono. Kimono is prepared for both males and females. Learning about a country through cultural workshops and activities will give you a better understanding of our intricate history, valued social principals and holistic way of life.

We will take you through the steps of making delicious sushi starting with preparing the lightly vinegared rice and finishing off with the perfect sushi roll! Together we will be making various types of sushi including Temaki-zushi which you will be able to prepare when you return home! At the end of the workshop you will be given a new sushi rolling mat (which is essential for making sushi!) and a recipe card to make sushi again so you can prepare some for your friends and family back home!

Tondaya is a traditional Kyoto machiya house, which was registered as National Cultural heritage in 1999 and also enlisted as Structure of Landscape Importance in Kyoto in 2007. We originally started Kimono wholesale business 140 years ago, but currently, we operate Nishijin Lifestyle Museum to promote the education of traditional Kyoto lifestyle culture here in Tondaya.
