The Night Tour Refuge is a 2-hour light hike in search of the creatures of the night, recommended for anyone who wants to see wildlife such as sloths, armadillos, porcupines, opossums, coatis, olingos, and kinkajous, as well as sleeping birds and a wide variety of insects, among others.
El Refugio is a privileged place to see bird species such as sleeping toucans, mot-mots, and black guans; treetop animals such as monkeys, coatis, olingos, sloths, frogs, snakes, and a wide variety of insects. On a typical tour, you will see 3-5 species of mammals, 5–10 species of birds, a couple of snakes or frogs, and many types of insects. This tour consists of a journey through the rain forest, located in the Tarcolitos River canyon that is part of the 200-hectare private reserve of the Hotel Villa Lapas, crossing the river 8 times with a total distance of 3.2km in a cart drawn by a tractor at low speed, so that you can appreciate both the flora and fauna of such a special area in Costa Rica as Carara is. During the tour we make several stops for bird watching and important trees in the area as well as a stop to see the river where even customers can get off the wagon and get into the pool. Our two carts have a capacity for 24 people and lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
