The Architecture of Phnom Penh by Cyclo

Cambodia’s capital has seen its fair share of turbulence in the past under the rulings of the Khmer Rouge; large parts of Phnom Penh were severely damaged, and parts of the city have been undergoing major reconstruction work. But the magic remains to dwell through the streets and landmarks – a rustic charm with ample references to its architectonical endeavours. Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modernity of other Asian capitals. With wide tree-lined boulevards and well-designed buildings, Phnom Penh still harks back to the colonial days of this former French playground and the French colonial buildings, much in evidence, add to the ambience. This, and using pedal-powered cyclos, is what makes this half-day exploration of Phnom Penh worth the fabulous views from your slow-moving means of transportation.

Private Half Day Trip to Genocidal Museum & Killing Field

8
Join a confronting yet essential tour in Phnom Penh to The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This tour will help you reflect on the devastating impact of the Khmer Rouge regime on modern Cambodia. We come face to face with the horrific crimes of the Khmer Rouge. Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. 17,000 people passed through the gates of this prison and only seven lived to tell the tale. We then travel out of town to the Killing Fields of ChoengEk. Prisoners from Tuol Sleng followed this same route to their fate. An old Chinese cemetery, ChoengEk was turned into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are kept in a memorial stupa here. Despite the horrors of the past, it is a peaceful place to go and a tranquil spot to reflect on the tragic events that engulfed Cambodia and its people.

Chiso temple, Neang khmao, and Taprum temple historical site Tour

4
Visit the 11th-century Chisor temple. At the back of the temple, there is a prime spot for views and pictures where you can see a vast plain of surrounding rice fields and countryside. From there, looking down to the east, one can see an avenue that forms a straight line connecting three main features, including two outer temples of cruciform ground plan and a moat. then we head to standing next to an active pagoda, Prasat Neang Khmau, which consists of two deteriorating brick prasats (towers) built in the Angkorian era in the 10th century A.D. under King Jayavarman IV. There was probably at least one more and perhaps as many as three more ancient prasats. Prasat Neang Khmau was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Next, visit Ta Prohm Temple, which was built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th or early 13th century. It is smaller than the similar Ta Prohm of Angkor but features a lot of very unique art. Finally, your last destination is Yeay Pov Temple.

Private Phnom Chisor Temple Day Trip from Phnom Penh

2
Phnom Chisor is a historical site located in Dokpor village, approximately 62km from Phnom Penh. It was built in the early 11th century by King Suryavarman and sits on top of a hill requiring visitors to climb 412 steps to the summit. A basic level of fitness is required to undertake this tour. The views alone make the climb worth the journey as it affords visitors a panoramic view of Takeo Province with rice paddies stretching for kilometers. It is framed on 3 sides by buildings of a modern pagoda. Inside the main temple there are Buddhist statues worshipped by the monks and lay pilgrims. An enclosure, partially ruined surrounds the ancient complex. In 1973 the area of Phnom Chisor was devastated by an US bomb attack and rebuilt in 1979.
