We booked excursion to Tsarskoje Selo for 6 people via Ostwest's website. Confirmation came the next day and guide Svetlana met us in hour hotel. She knew everything and we spent information packed 5 hours learning so much about past and also present in St. Petersburg.

Yuriev Monastery
One of the oldest Russian settlements, mentioned in chronicles as early as 859, Novgorod served alongside Kiev as second largest trade center of the old Russian States. With the name literally meaning New Town, Novgorod is situated on the bank of the river Volchov, between St. Petersburg and Moscow somewhat at a distance of 250 km from St. Petersburg.
Exempted from the destruction of Mongolian yoke, Novgorod remained a center of an Independent Russian State of Russian North. In the beginning of the 18th century Novgorod became part of the St. Peterburg’s Region. With the latter taking the place of the chief northern trade center, the town of Novgorod went into decline.

The modern region of Novgorod was established in 1944, after the town was released from the two-year German occupation. During this period the town had been destroyed to a large extent. Today the town and its surrounding villages have a population of 750,000 people.
