We booked excursion to Tsarskoje Selo for 6 people via Ostwest's website. Confirmation came the next day and guide Svetlana met us in hour hotel. She knew everything and we spent information packed 5 hours learning so much about past and also present in St. Petersburg.

Kazan. Panoramic view of the city
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and is located in central Russia on the East-European plain. It was built at the confluence of the two big rivers Kama and Volga, about 797 km away from Moscow to the east. The town of Kazan has been founded by the Volga Bulgarians in 1005. Until the middle of the 16th century it was the capital of the Kazan Khanate. In the year 1552 Ivan the Terrible conquered Kazan and added it to the Russian States.

Today Kazan has got approximately 1 200 000 inhabitants, of which 40% are Russians and 40% are Tartars with 20% of other nationalities thrown in for a good measure. Tatarstan is a multinational society, a bridge between Europe and Asia and between different religions and cultures. The two largest religious groups are the Russian-Orthodox Church (39%) and the Islam (52%), which live in harmony together. In addition there are Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Hare Krishnas and followers of the Bahai religion.

The town is extremely picturesque and offers many well-preserved historical buildings, minarets, and churches. The Kremlin of Kazan is amongst the most beautiful kremlins of Russia. One can feel the centuries’ old history in most parts of the inner city. Because of its historical and religious influences Kazan represents a unique cultural treasury.
The Mosque Kul Sharif
Additionally to its rich historical background, Kazan is the most important regional, political, scientific, and cultural center of central Russia today. Since 2005 the town has got an underground train system of Metro. It is 18 km long, and by now has got 14 stops. The University of Kazan was founded in 1804 and it is one of the oldest universities in Russia. Particularly worth seeing are the Kremlin (end of 16th century), the mosque Kul-Sharif, Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, and the old City Hall.
